Thinking of that George Orwell quote from 1984: “You had to live - did live, from habit that became instinct - in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every moment scrutinized.”
Perhaps even in darkness!
Why use telescreens to watch people when you can just monitor the methods they use to communicate what they're doing? Seems like a pretty reasonable comparison in a way.
