If you're going to be pedantic at least consult a dictionary first:

"any 1 [ usu. with negative or in questions ] used to refer to one or some of a thing or number of things, no matter how much or many"



See how that entry says "usu. with negative or in questions"? The usage in this case is neither negative nor a question, and so many, like the gp and myself, found it confusing.
