Consumer printers were dot matrix at the time, and they were not adequately high density to print fonts. That's correct.

But the AppleWriter printer was high DPI and could render fonts.

And then of course the Apple LaserWriter came a few years later.

This is why the Apple LaserWriter was such a big deal. It came out 1 year after the Macintosh, merging Canon’s laser printer engine, Adobe’s PostScript, and the Mac’s bitmapped display with proportional fonts.
