I do not understand why this term is offensive.

Is it the “illegal” part? Well, it is illegal, so…

Is it the “alien” part? Why? Do people think we are comparing people to lanky green invaders? I can’t see this — we have plenty of words with two meanings that don’t get conflated.

I dislike these language games. They are simply a forced litmus test for political leanings.
