We need a PKI run by the governments. National ID cards that are smart cards. Cryptographically sign any and all digital communication. Self-signed certificates could still be used with TOFU.

However, I'm not sure if total loss of pseudonymity is less of a horror scenario.



I've been wondering what would be the event that causes digital signatures to become the norm. Though, I didn't expect it to be machine learning. I'm scared by how much is just done by phone with people who don't know me.


You can still use pseudonyms with PKIs. The CA will know who you really are, but it doesn’t need to be public by default. And it can be regulated such that a judicial order is necessary to disclose your identity to a third party (including to the government).
