So far I’ve seen attacks that Lula is not a “good” politician. And it is notable that he was prosecuted in the past, found guilty, and acquitted on what some see as a technicality. (I’m paraphrasing and this is clearly controversial. But I’m only looking to summarize briefly to make my next point.)
We here in the west aren’t a homogeneous society. That’s the point of the west. It’s opt-in and generally lets locals do what locals want (with exceptions, of course, but as a trend.)
I think it’s time to renew that what may be good or even just the decided path of one polity doesn’t have to be and probably can’t be universally applicable nor appealing to the larger western world order. The point is whether the relevant politicians and leaders generally agree with western trade policies, international treaties/agreements and things like borders and rule of law.
Edit-not having any luck with a clip from this interview. But Stephen Kotkin makes similar points here: https://youtu.be/2a7CDKqWcZ0
I don’t think this is a good framing. Lula has financed dictatorships in South America and Africa, has taken corruption money for personal benefit and used money from the healthcare budget for other means.
Somehow escaped justice too. Someone informed me in another thread that the cases against him were dropped last year in the middle of the pandemic. He won't even be tried again. This corrupt socialist actually gets to claim he's innocent.
