Strongly linked to economics. More kids is a survival strategy and less kids happen when you can invest more in value producing education and life extension over just having more hands to maintain subsistence existence.
Africa is fixing itself. If we can push back on religious fundamentalism around contraception, if Melinda Gates continues to fund reproductive health initiatives, and if other health and economics work right, then we're on target to a soft(er) landing.
Btw, we'll need those Africans to replace population decline in more economically advanced places. Merkel accepted 1.5m refugees in Germany on both humanitarian and economic grounds, a trend which over the 50+ year window will continue.
