Old browsers don't really work "as well as they ever did".

The web is a moving target, and after a couple of years an old release will be close to unusable.

Firefox is currently the only serious competitor to Chrome, Safari having its known defects and Edge -- well, Edge being Edge.

So it's crucial that Firefox remains in the game, even as a (usable) wavebreaker to Chrome.
