The world is in a crisis of trust. We are losing faith in each other. AI has further undermined that trust; audio and video recordings can no longer be trusted like they once were. The impact is still being felt.
It takes longer to build than destroy. Not just trust. Anything. The lack of trust has created friction for everything; more regulations, deeper background checks, purchasing goods and services… the list goes on. Overall, AI is making this situation worse, not better.
That said, I have seen a revolution coming for decades, and I think this AI-paved road to dystopian hell should at least be entertaining.
The problem is that we've replaced tribal trust networks with increasing systemization and the more of that we build the more brittle the whole thing gets. We have a global society that is more complex and interdependent than ever before. We've set ourselves up for a kind of economic Kessler syndrome and we're gleefully adding more layers to it.
If this happens, our Roku TV is going in the trash. They locked out their customers of their own devices by pushing updated firmware that forced agreement to new terms. They lost my trust during that episode, and this move shows that was the right decision.
Meanwhile, Fox lost my respect decades ago. The idea that they could gain network level access to one of my devices cannot be reconciled with my need to feel secure and safe in my own home.
Anyone wanna take the opportunity to share their favorite brands and models of dumb TVs?
The government software infrastructure has holes that makes Swiss cheese look solid as a rock.
There is no way these systems could be secured in a decade, but I don’t believe they will even try. Knowing developers that have walked those halls, it is not and will not be a priority.
I was taught that leaders are only respectful of their constituents when they are within “strangling distance”; they should be literally afraid of the consequences of their actions.
Heck, I suspect the existing legislation poses active obstacles for further unhinging our systems of liberty and justice. Thus, I fully expect them to replace with something even worse. Lawlessness being but one obvious possibility.
