See also The Profession by Isaac Asimov [0] and his small story The Feeling of Power [1]. Both are social dramas about societies that went far down the path of ignorance.

European Citizen here, and indeed lots of people in IT turn a blind eye onto the collateral damage their work may create.

I know someone who happily codes "verifiable credentials" in Elixir, disregarding all externalities.

What's wrong with verifiable credentials? It's an important thing to have it seems? Your passport or a bank card are verifiable credentials, or at least are designed to be.

It's an EU thing, overcomplicated an not sovereign:

Oh dear, web 3.0, blockchain. Do we get our sovereign monkey NFT too?

Verifiable credentials (VCs) are W3C standards and do not involve blockchains. Nor does Web 3.0.

Tell this your parlamenentarian.

Who wrote that law and why, this is the question.

I think we need some fingerpointing that EU officials strive to avoid.

You probably mean carbon credits, from the EU Emissions Trading System. Wikipedia has a lengthy and well-balanced article on the subject: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Union_Emissions_Tradi...

It's an ugly and wasteful system set up instead of other, simpler measure that were politically unacceptable at the time, like higher VAT, excise duties on all fossil fuels across all industries without exception, including fuel oil for heating and aviation fuel.

The article starts with a picturesque "Sam Altman holding a knife to Tim Berners-Lee's throat", I woyld wish there be an LLM to generate that, are there any?

Hetzner backup servers make for a great restic backend.

Scaleway Glacier... not so much.

Amazon, Google and Microsoft all have now Digital Sovereignty positions and crooks of all kinds fill the niches.

Nothing unusual here.

Digital Sovereignty for Europeans is impossible with US based companies

I am still using mutt.

This should be the top comment and shame on Euronews for the slop!

How coincidental given your nickname /s

What I think is funny is how much more traction this duplicate got than the post I didn’t delete :)
