Equipment always seems expensive at first, but then you realize that piece of tech is used almost 24h a day and gives so much back...

It is based on Mahoney technique. Achievement is in added decompression routine that works in those 21 cycles per sample. Lot's of cool info in that article. Nicely done !

Yes, there are a number of QBasic reimplementations and compatible languages. FreeBASIC is one that aims to be a (compatible) successor rather than just a reimplementation. I can't remember what the others are...
