I just want to proudly, but also sadly, boast that Polk county once produced more oranges than the entire state of California.

Florida was a beautiful place not long ago, but a very peculiar and aggressively anti indigenous development is redefining it daily. Things have become so strange that squalid retention ponds qualify as wetland restoration.

I could rant for a while, but won't. Sarasota once produced more celery than possibly all states combined, and that helped us get through the Depression locally. But we sure did grow some oranges, and how wonderful the scent of orange blossoms are. It's something to behold.

Florida is a democracy. Florida voted for leaders who ignore these problems because of “woke”.

Floridians deserve the results.

I will grant clemency for anyone who was born there and isn’t wealthy enough to move out.

I will grant 10x hate for anyone who moved there for the politics and complains about the results.

Born here. And for me, the government is the pine flats, the oaks and palmetto scrubs, the springs, the sea, the spirit of the Timucua, sandhill cranes, thunderstorms.

If Billy Bowlegs or Geronimo come back, I'll vote for them. I'd consider voting for someone who actually respected this place, but I'm not sure anyone does. I've been to nearly every state, and some other lands, but there's no place finer. I'm pure Florida man.

> I've been to nearly every state, and some other lands, but there's no place finer. I'm pure Florida man.

Ok, then you have the capability of leaving and haven’t. I judge you heavily.

Everytime I hear a southron bastard crow about secession I agree with them. Especially when I see the morons making up maps of the “national divorce” that give New England the gas fields of Pennsylvania.

I hope bugs bunny manifests into reality and cuts Florida off of the mainland.

Yup, the things that outlast any government are what means the most.

I'm a native too and I'll add a data point.

It's people who moved to Florida that voted the destructive operators into leadership positions, once they outnumbered the natives.

We all know this too well. The last 30 years has been similar to watching my closest friend be ravaged by terminal illness. It hurts, bad. All I can do is aim for a small farm (proximal to protected forest) someday, if I can ever afford so.

What I can say is that the terrain is being pushed too far and closer to a breaking point than most realize. One anomalous back-to-back hurricane series could reveal this rather harshly. Florida is wetlands, not a shopping center. We can't just expect the bays to swallow everything. Someday we could have airboat options for visiting Disney. Pestilence, contamination from flooding, excessive heat on an isolated power island, mucho etc - yeah, we could realize soon.

Unfortunately, both of these medicines have substantially adverse effects on me. Ibuprofen destroys my stomach, often affecting me for days after a single dose. Acetaminophen leaves my stomach fine, but has subtle, but noticeably negative affects on my cognition and general energy levels. Both are often ineffective for bouts of significant pain, which is frequent for me.

To mitigate this, I supplement with NAC (N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine) anytime I'm forced to take acetaminophen. I will also sometimes take Betaine Anhydrous.

I do the same for ibuprofen, but sans betaine and instead take aloe, probiotics (bacillus subtilis/coagulans, Mastic Gum and experiment with other things.

For acute pain, neither does anything. And though I'll get attacked for this here, I find a stout dose of quality, lab tested Kratom (red strain) to be far more effective than both acetaminophen and ibuprofen combined. However, for regular pain, this is not a good plan, as the withdrawals can exceed the nature of the problem itself.

I sure do wish we'd get over the anti opiate [1] craze someday, or at least discover and make available an effective alternative.

1. Aside from constipation and obvious risks of dependency (or abuse), opiates have none of the deleterious effects of ibuprofen or acetaminophen, and the constipation is easily mitigated, and a bit of agmatine sulfate for saying adios when the pain subsides.

I just went through T14 Gen 1 hell. I tried to replace a broken LCD and the system just wouldn't boot. I fussed with it so much, the flimsy case cracked and broke in several places. I gave up and decided to use it as a clamshell, but had to keep the broken screen connected to boot.

But I couldn't get it to see the external monitor. I fought this for hours. I finally reached my patience threshold and tore the fucking LCD off the case. It hurt the hands a bit but was cathartic. Amazingly, it booted and saw the monitor, magically. I was astonished. With or without the broken screen, it wouldn't boot. But going psycho on it fixed it. Proof in the wholesomeness of violence, maybe not. But...

it's not running BSD. It's now my mom's desktop, and it's running Void. Works great, and I love the Ryzen 4700, with 16gb ram and atheros wifi chip. Delicate, but capable of some extremes :)

Is this not too much? HN or not, does this not demand the attention of everyone?

Absolutely. I posted it a while ago but - predictably - it got flagged.

https://hackernews.hn/item?id=47674286

The interesting thing is that people do seem to find it.

It's almost like 'shadow-banned'

it's not listed as flagged or dead, but it's also not on the first 4 pages despite https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/trump-warns-a-whole-civil... being on the 4th page with only 23 points

It was on page #11 last I checked, past 330.

Its on /active I think

This absolutely demands the attention of every American

I'm currently running a Debian lite weight server on an old ml100 (onlogic) nuc. It's an old i3, with 16gb ram and no fan. But I have another. Anyone recommend a solid router setup on one of these ancient artifacts? Presently using openwrt on a proper router, though if the nuc is capable, I'd dedicate it thusly.

So how do you think this situation will change now that LexisNexis, Oracle, Palantir, Clearview and others are all converging with our four frontier LLM models (plus military contracts) or directly with their own AI?

What used to require a little work is now instant. And we're much further into the predictive part than most will admit.

I figure it's fair enough, since this is a great but not free book, to drop https://www.allaboutcircuits.com/ - a truly amazing, and in my opinion extraordinarily well written and organized free learning resource.

Specifically https://www.allaboutcircuits.com/textbook/

It's a labor of love and a great reference to go back to, but I wouldn't recommend it for newcomers.

Traditional books benefit from having an editor who (ideally) asks questions like "who are you writing for", "what's the best order to introduce ideas", and "how much detail is enough". If you don't ask these questions, you often end up getting too deep into the weeds or jumping back and forth between ideas in ways that can be difficult to follow. To give you a specific example, the guide spends a lot of time on some of the more obscure theories in DC network analysis before even defining what a battery is, capacitors and inductors are explained in the DC section by focusing on their AC characteristics, there is a ton of unnecessary quantum physics trivia ahead of explaining what a diode is, discussion of op-amps kicks off with an odd reference to calculus, etc.

Again, I don't mean that as a criticism, it's just that (properly edited) books have their merits.

I think you make excellent points and can't see anything I don't agree with. For me, there's no substitute for a proper book, especially being a bit of an eccentric learner.

But certainly AAC could be a brilliant supplementary resource.

The Art of Electronics, by Horowitz and Hill, is aimed at a university or professional audience, but could also be an incredible learning resource for a younger student (or older hobbyist!) interested in learning more about the field.

Speaking for myself, I would have loved to read something like this when I was first experimenting with electronics as a child. A lot of the details would have gone over my head, but even just knowing the general outlines of the topics it covered would have been a huge step up.

[flagged]

Thanks for the name. I've only glanced so far, but I foresee reading more of his work.

My homebaked threat models predict exactly this. But I imagine there could be some financial style hiccups too, for sci-fi, perhaps something that ushers a CBDC as the solution. Stay tuned.... And remember FDIC cannot handle a large event. It's been admitted.

I've been using open camera on android since 2019.

It's far superior to anything I've seen natively installed on any device. It has a lot of options, which I suspect can be confusing to some, but they're worth familiarizing with.

My favorite feature is the macro, which when coupled with the right UI settings produces photos that when I have printed, result in the person saying "wow! You took that with a phone!?". And I say "yeah. Open Camera. It's great, try it sometime".

Highly recommend.

What phone do you have?

I havent tried Open Camera in a while, but my conclusion is that the phone's camera app is best.

Unable to afford a Google-free phone, I strictly use Moto, which with a bit of adb work and a lot of disabling shitware, gets close to actual Android. They also have excellent glass, aside from doing all I require of them.

I see criticism of Open Cam already, but I recommend trying it, with patience, and seeing what it can do. All my art images, all my videos, are all taken with open camera.

Edit: for the macro setting, it allows fine tuning, but the manual focus and manual zoom functions are superb for my purposes.

Edit2: Maybe irrelevant, but I always disable the stock camera and anything camera related. Not sure if that helps, but I know I don't want any fucking thing to do with shitware, so go as nuclear as possible.

Dismissing the stock apps as "shitware" without bothering to try them or offer specific examples of areas where Opencam is better does not inspire confidence in your opinions.

Full manual controls does not mean "better". I've been a photographer for more than 20 years using everything from fully-manual (no battery) film setups through modern mirrorless bodies. I know the tradeoffs between shutter speed, ISO, and aperture, I know how to manual focus.

....and most of the time I don't want any of those, especially on a phone, where I want a clear photo of a stationary object and the phone's automatic settings get it right the first time.

If something allows full manual controls but takes two seconds longer to be ready to shoot it is significantly worse as a camera for most of my use cases.

I'm not asking for confidence. Folks can use their own critical thinking and judgement. I expressed sincerity. Some concur, some don't. I'm not trying and will not try to please everyone.

The current state of software is to some, myself, deeply offensive and many have passionate opposition to it. If you are into stockware, you won't ever find me in your way. But you'll not bully me into not expressing my opinion either. Shitware defines it perfectly to the very type of person bothering to use Fdroid and freedom respecting devices.

What dark patterns is the Pixel Camera app using, or what bad things is it doing with my data? In what way is my camera app infringing on my freedom? "It was written by company X I don't like" is not an answer - why should I replace my camera app specifically?

One negative of the Pixel camera app is that it forces Google Photos as the gallery app, even if Google Photos is disabled or not installed on the phone. I think there is a third-party shim app that essentially redirects requests to Google Photos towards whatever gallery app is set as default, but that should not be necessary.

@Arainach - Because the option to reply is disabled:

I am not sure, as I haven't used that app. What I can say, which may or may not be relevant to you is as follows:

1) Open any Google based device and do the equivalent of /Settings/System/DeveloperOptions/RunningServices/GooglePlayServices

You can peruse around just Running Services if you please, and see plenty there, but be sure to view Show Cached Processes too.

Under Play Services, you will see approximately 24 services, some reasonable, some not. Crisis Alert, Emergency Services, Vestiges of Contact Tracing rebranded, etc.

Try using Google Maps without BT and WiFi scanning, and just pure GPS. Maps won't work.

Try disabling Google Play services, or Play Store and watch Fdroid apps break, and the phone malfunction.

2) Go to /Settings/Apps/See All/Show System and behold a plethora of verified shitware, much of which cannot be removed even through ABD.

Then ask yourself Why? Most of these services are unnecessary. You, presumably, purchased, rather than leased or rented your device. So why can you cannot decide what runs on it? Many do not care. I do. I get zero reimbursement for this data mining shitware.

...or me, I say, if they need that shitware running so badly, buy their own phone and stick it where ever they want, but not on my person. We have entered a paradigm where everyone thinks Because They Can, they can just do whatever they choose on the devices of others. And what happens? We get stronger and stronger devices while the landfills engorge with waste, so that we can support a metadata whorehouse on our personal devices. If you support that, I do not oppose you, I oppose it on my system, as do others, which are the type of people I tend to direct such comments to.

No offense was intended. A comment above drops in merely to say Open Cam 'kinda sucks'. I do not downvote it, nor do I agree. I just carry on.

Is it really as good as Google Camera at computational photography; noise reduction, night mode, deblurring, stacking, etc.? That would be very impressive.

Depends on specific purpose and values. And it's a simple installation away from empirical validation.

Edit: one feature I'm fond of, when posting images on the Internet, is disabling exif data. I don't always want to put my coordinates on the Internet.

Disclaimer: I last used it years ago.

My experience was that while it was great with all the features, the photo quality simply was worse than the stock manufacturer app in newer phones. Only in my old Samsung Galaxy S5 was the quality on par.

Yes, by all means, everyone should try and compare.

No. It actually kinda sucks.

Its the same way that the Pinephone is "usable" but really, it sucks.

>"it's increasingly difficult to actually have a dissenting voice online."

If willing, I would appreciate some examples, actual or hypothetical. I have left a few comments regarding my concerns over AI and have been surprised by the hostile reactions. Much of my research kindof revolves around a central concern matching your statement. But my perspective is in a vacuum, out of touch with what others are dealing with. Feel free to ignore this if not comfortable.

Don't apologize for your truth. A lot of people on reddit/HN fancy themselves as free-thinkers and the moment something contradicts their reality they reveal themselves to be as emotionally vulnerable as the rest of humanity.

It was already going downhill a decade ago, eg, using bad think on video games.

But my personal experience is something snapped in a lot of people during COVID when people asked reasonable questions like — “is an experimental gene therapy really QALY positive in populations not at risk, such as healthy children?”

According to government actuarial tables, the answer was no: the UK government concluded that there was no point at which for those under 40 the immunizations prevented more serious outcomes than they caused. But people were (and often still are) absolutely rabid if you point out we (in administering a QALY negative treatment to a vulnerable population) decided to poison children and young adults en masse. I’ve had people look up my mother on Facebook for calmly citing UK government actuarial reports, which did the calculation on COVID vs vaccine harms.

That’s setting aside that on HN you’d get shadowbanned for even posting the clip of BLM leaders describing themselves as “trained Marxists” and BLM itself as Marxist in ideology. Apparently, no matter how politely you state facts, if HN froths irrationally in response it is an “inherent flamewar”.

But I’m not sure I qualify for what you’re asking, as I generally post under my true identity, not anonymously.

Your examples are tips of icebergs that indicate much more problematic opinions. I’m not shocked you received pushback.

That’s exactly my point:

HN is a place where people don’t ask what is true with intellectual curiosity but classify opinions as “problematic” and justify bullying people based on that.

HN becomes emotionally upset if you discuss actuarial tables or quote people’s own words from their own presentations because those facts go against the narratives many on HN believe — and like many before them, people on HN believe censorship and bullying are justified by that emotional turmoil.

As you just did, impugning my character while carefully avoiding the veracity of my claims — only saying they’re “problematic”, as a good apparatchik would.

Do you have a citation for said actuarial tables? I think HN is often critical of objective claims without objective references.

HN was one of the best places for finding cited research regarding covid and the mrna tech at the time.

With all the other conflicting information floating around online, it was a breath of fresh air to come to HN and see articles describing exactly how mrna works and why it was likely not a health risk, complete with thoughtful discussion. I'm too lazy to go look up citations and reference those old posts, so you can take this as anecdotal.

Little bit of projection in this comment, I would say. I didn’t reference your character, just your opinions - to equate the two is a bit juvenile - which now may be a reference to your character.

Also, “problematic” is perhaps the least emotional word I could have used, and yet you still found issue with it.

I would advise you stop viewing HN as a monolith, it will help you get over your victim complex, which will in turn hopefully help you see opinions as things worth changing based on new information, rather than value for your character.

Much indeed. The word "problematic" is one of the most terribly overused words in today's age.

Yeah it’s a euphemism and a bit of a shibboleth, which, like all shibboleths, can be a bit triggering to those who feel outgrouped by it.

I could’ve been more precise: “opinions that are based on weak evidence that confirm a certain preimagined view of the world rather than challenge it”.

Ah a fancy description for religion!

I would like to say that this is why my country turned to atheism but really it was the Sunday morning.

I mean they made claims about the efficacy and risks of the COVID vaccine without sourcing them and used verbiage like "poisoning our children" to refer to vaccinating them. I think tip of the iceberg for "problematic opinions" is a fair response.

Just noting that I appreciate all the examples given here and by others, many of which made me feel a bit stupid and amnesic for asking my original question. I guess I have been over-focused on AI...

> That’s setting aside that on HN you’d get shadowbanned for even posting the clip of BLM leaders describing themselves as “trained Marxists” and BLM itself as Marxist in ideology. Funny how you mention this like you expect everyone to take for granted that Marxist=bad and worth "hiding" etc... whereas negative reactions are likely due more towards that internal judgement discrediting yourself, vs trying to "hide the Marxism."

You think you can discredit people by saying "they're Marxists!" and yet you think people today are uniquely bad snowflakes about views they don't like. You're proposing that people are more likely to cry thoughtcrime now than in the past, by inadvertently exposing how you've bought into this idea of how just invoking the name of some old philosopher is worth demonization and has been for DECADES in many western countries...

Specs and logs, motes and beams.

Which specific points from which specific Marx texts piss you off so much?

(It's also funny that you didn't actually link to any of the things you stated. I don't care about the things you brought up enough to go hunting for them myself to try do prove or disprove you, but... do you really think saying "I can't cite these simple facts without getting in trouble" *without even citing them, just asking us to believe you that they're easily cite-able, is gonna go over so convincingly?)

If there’s nothing wrong with Marxism then his comment is a golden opportunity to show all the positive outcomes of Marxist policies/governments.
