Sedentary adults showed dramatically accelerated biological aging across all abnormal sleep durations. Those sleeping fewer than 6 hours and without regular exercise had a phenotypic age nearly 3.3 years older than their well-rested peers.

Cue the dinosaur jokes.

After I retired from programming I took a part time volunteer gig as a ‘Father Advocate’ at a pregnancy center. I talk with young men with a pregnant partner, preparing them for fatherhood.

There is a crisis in this workspace. Many young men grew up without a father, and they’ve missed out on decades of learning by example. They are often ill-prepared for the role of father and don’t really know what a father does. Their lives are often much less satisfying than they should be.

Please help raise awareness for this problem. Donate, volunteer, do what you can. The stories are heartbreaking and the path forward is often unclear. Every single one wants to break the cycle, but help is needed.

They all knew they were going to die soon.

They knew how broken the world is— they took part in the mayhem. They knew there is great evil around.

They found peace. Most asked forgiveness and apologized for what they had done. They left their relatives and friends with reasons to think of them as deeply flawed, but not completely terrible.

It seems a smart thing to do. It’s better than staying evil, frustrated and scared of your impending death.

Interesting.

Advanced banjo players will sometimes use harmonics for a ‘bell’ effect. Here’s a short video from Alison Brown, a great player.

Steve Hackett takes advantage of guitar harmonics in a piece inspired by Bach's prelude to the first suite for solo violincello:

And the late Jaco Pastorius with the bass harmonics song that would have broken the Internet if we had had the internet when he released his first solo album:

Speaking as a person who owns basses... I like the sound of harmonics on a bass better. I think it's something to do with the longer strings giving more play to the overtones.

“O Brother, Where Art Thou?” Is criminally underranked.

Same with “Hail, Caesar!"

“ Smith thought people could morally improve themselves in part by entering imaginatively into other people’s perspectives, in part by stepping outside their own perspectives and taking, as my mother used to say, a good long look at themselves.”

As the company liquidates, bond holders are among the first people to be paid after assets and liabilities are netted out. You’d likely get some portion of the face value of the bond at that time. ( Also no future interest payments. )

Thanks!

That’s very true.

The frozen plains of North Dakota aren’t worth much without oil. With oil, they provide good paying jobs to people who otherwise won’t have them.

I lived in the next state south for many years. Oil is definitely popular with the people of North Dakota.

With all due respect, I disagree.

I loved the winters. I loved the people. I loved how its natural beauty was subtle and rewarded the patient, unlike El Capitan or the Black Hills. The economy was fine before oil appeared.

My point is not that oil fails to generate revenue. Clearly it is a lucrative business. Instead, my claim is that the state economy was remarkably robust, productive, healthy, and well-optimized for middle class quality of life pre-2007.

Does it sound surprising to you that it was perfectly normal to rent a perfect acceptable two bedroom apartment in a safe town on the interstate for $300 a month and still easily find dignified, decent paying jobs without 1000 applications?

I've lived in many cities and work in tech now, and I can confidently say that, as it concerns the professions and jobs that unambiguously sustain and improve life, no community on the planet was more productive than my home state. There is more to the story than some shale.

"Studies underscore cocaine's significant impact on Colombia's economy"

Snort another line while you're at it.

I mean... You're not wrong.

I see you speak in the past tense. So you’ve moved away, in spite of your love for the winters?

>I loved the winters. I loved the people.

My pet theory based on personal observation is that there's a strong inverse correlation between nature trying to destroy your shit and insufferable people.

First, study history. Our generation is downright lucky. This is the best time to be alive, truly.

Then avoid the news and politics. Live your own life, and enjoy analog hobbies.
