Why should he care about another company's workers? He should care about his own company and workers and gaining them new customers.

Because we live in a society with some ideas of decency, integrity and so on. He shouldn’t. That’s why he could receive this kind of feedback.

Because in a ruthless cuthroat world everyone but the very worst of people lose out, and even then the very worst tend to lose too since the whole distribution shifts down, not just the mean/mode/median but the min/max as well.

ultimately, if you create a system where the only tools left are those also avaliable to the stupid, and therefore skills the stupid have an edge in, given a lifetime of experience, then your whole system becomes run by / dominated by these types.

toxic behaviour and violenece in general are tools of the stupid, for only the stupid would fail to see mutually benefifial alternatives.


If the idea of immoral business (under the false guise of "amorality" - false because amorality still implies the avoidance of explicit harm) becomes too widespread, the resulting suffering will be large enough that people will start killing CEOs (or the closest thing they can get) in numbers. Which, to be clear, is bad.

Nothing wrong with any of those positions. And largely irrelevant to whether he's good at his job and whether Brave is a good browser which it is for various reasons, one of which being he leads the company.


Or more likely, the journalists don't know any better and believe the AI hype sold to them and promote it of their own accord.

Well, this is its own sort of problem though [0]. A good thing about a BDFL is unambiguously having someone in charge, accountable and responsible with power to "decide" as opposed to no one or too many fighting for it. When people ask this question I think they intend to know "who does Linus want or will he put in charge?"

It probably has something to do with mass-production for a mass audience (not that they'll even succeed here). Look at the success of smartphones and compare their capabilities to full powered computers. They want to make it up on volume, so you have a quantity over quality dynamic of iOS-ified lowering of productive capacity.

Yea, very respectable usage of technology and I relate completely, but our type is a minority of the addressable market. So toy-computers is what will be produced. This is the pessimistic reality of "democratization of technology". It makes you miss the glory days when the main target market for computers was more advanced users. Offerings for that segment could be a larger portion of sales and would thus get focus from product development that would lack today's lowest-common-denominator designs.


It's extremely irritating, distracting, and breaks focus on the content instead of the annoying stylistic choice, just an fyi..but I imagine you probably like that this is true and purposely try to annoy the people that aren't in the little club. I don't know if you meant to direct this at the person you're replying to but I'm convinced the overwhelming majority of people don't get out of bed in the morning with any of that in mind

It's comments like these that make me reconsider what hateful meanings others might read into my communications or mistakes


Yes I mean this to anyone repeatedly, consciously fighting natural convention and muscle memory to purposely type every letter in lowercase, knowing that this produces in the reader a slight dissonance and distraction constantly, and choosing to do this instead of using convention that everyone understands so that "syntax" does not become the focus and instead the content of the message does.

Otherwise they're "drawing attention" to the style and themselves for narcissistic reasons. I would simply assume they'd have to know the annoyance this brings to the reader, so I assume it's on purpose.

I would feel the same about someone writing code in a consistently purposeful unorthodox style and against convention in such an obvious and effortful way that no one is used to. Personally, and YMMV, I like to try to write in as clear a way as I can to get my point across as much as possible. Useless stylistic fluff in something that isn't poetry, seems counter to that purpose.

It's not a mistake though to ensure every letter one writes is not following convention and English syntax. Accidents and mistakes are a different thing.


Then don't slack. Keep doing your work at a high level, but from home. Do you not see how this is the optimal strategy?

Maybe. Later than if he quits, and maybe not if they reverse their position like they've done a few times already. If he quits right away he's guaranteeing he doesn't have that job.


Keep working from home until they fire you, while making contingency plans. What are they going to do if many just keep staying home while actually doing work? At the very least this will drag out the resolution of the issue much longer.


That strategy comes with a nonzero chance of having unemployment delayed (fired for cause). So if OP chooses that route, he/she better have a bulletproof reserve and a plan B and plan C if it takes longer than expected to get a new job.

I do think that this is a just strategy, though. If you give 100% of what was contracted, and your colleagues know you are all in on the success of the team, your high functioning team can outlast the winds of change from HR, easy.


This is true if he quits too though, which I thought was the other option being considered. If he wants to just comply and keep working there then this post is unnecessary. Being fired would come much later than quitting. In the mean time he can pursue other jobs too while also calling their bluff that they'll reverse mandate like they've done before.


If you get fired from your 6 figure cushy engineering job and need that unemployment, what are you even doing..


There is nothing wrong about collecting unemployment insurance if you’re unemployed, regardless of your previous job or salary.

I don’t know where this mind worm of not using programs that were literally made for these circumstances but you are entitled to use them and should collect them.

The company pays for unemployment insurance, if they don’t want to pay their premium rates increasing they shouldn’t have fired people.
