The craziest part of the justice system is how dependent on money it is.
I am in a weekly support group for people with the same offense category as me, sometimes crimes not as bad as mine. Most of the members in this group are working class - hourly jobs, no savings, no emergency funds, government lawyers. They mostly had to serve time, had to register as offenders, have strict stipulations.
Meanwhile I was able to borrow money from my parents, got a good lawyer, and all I have to do is check in with probation once a month for a few years.
This applies to everything in life ever. People with resources have better outcomes. I don't know how you solve for that no matter what systems you put into place.
What surprises be about reddit is that they get advertisers and ads while having one of the largest porn communities.
No one talks about this, and people are quick to say "Tumblr/4chan is just porn!", but not only is there a myriad of porn subreddits, many of them have OC content (people posting themselves), who thanks to reddit's new profile followers feature have a fanbase. One only needs to look at /r/sexsells (NSFW) to see this in action.
With the shutdown of Craigslist personals, people are (using and have been using) reddit for hookups as well. Crazy that they "get away" with the #1 killer of social media platform ad revenue.
I suspect this is due to a firewall between the types of content. I don't remember what interview I was listening to years ago, but I think it was Matt Cutts who said that Google has a whole porn team that makes sure that when you want porn, you get the most relevant porn sites and when you don't want porn, you get none.
I think Reddit is in the same boat. People don't avoid Google ads because they might end up on porn; in fact, lots of products only want to be placed next to porn.
If my understanding is correct, subreddits that host NSFW material (or at least, a substantial amount of it) get tagged and age gated. I imagine it's pretty easy to let advertisers opt out of those areas.
Age-gated subreddits are those that are listed as NSFW(18+). We ask that advertisers advertising adult-related products/services focus their targeting on these subreddits to ensure we are serving ads to the appropriate audience.
Dude, don't know what the ad hominem is all about, but if you have rational arguments to dispute the studies by UC Davis or the methodology behind Lebrero's bug count analysis, I'd love to hear them.
Yeah, letting other people know that it's okay not to like those shows. I enjoy and upvote when people voice dissenting opinions, so I like to do it too.
This is Hacker News, my friend. Anyone who has a negative opinion is showered with praise and upvotes for being a contrarian and a bold ideologue. (Unless that opinion is about Rust, or, apparently, TV.) Don't just take my word on it- go see any product launch here, from the small leagues all the way to Musk's latest work, and watch as people crap on it. (And get upvotes.)
To be honest, I'm not impressed with people who are contrarian for the sake of being contrarian. Like yourself, it triggers some circuitry in the brains of many HNers that cause them to enjoy it, even if the actual content of the post is not as high as an equivalent, non-contrarian post. If you understand this circuitry is being fired, you can see the contrarianism for what it really is.
